Although your face is the epicenter of displays of emotion, it is also indisputable that your hands are rich with storytelling – from birthmarks and scars, to rings and tattoos, your hands are canvases of their own, painting the story of a lifetime. Your hands grasp, they gesture, they venture, they comfort. Hands have always fascinated me, from the intricacy of their lines to their hidden wells of expression.

That is why this contest is dedicated to hands – more specifically, the photography thereof.

I’d like you to photograph someone’s hands other than your own, and tell me a little bit about this person. It could be a member of your family, a friend, or even a stranger you meet while waiting for the morning train. You could write paragraphs about what these hands have to say, or simply write a sentence explaining what you were able to learn about this person, and possibly infer what their hands can tell you about their life.

Rules:

You will be judged on the originality of your composition, as well as the quality of the prose passage you submit about your subject. (Please note: if English is not your first language, that is alright! You will not be penalized for grammar or misspellings if English is your second language. What I am looking for is an understanding of the subject beyond what you can see.)

Other than simple editing done on Photoshop or other editing software, please do not manipulate your photography! In other words, please don’t use stock photography and other supplementary sources.

Each contestant may submit up to two entries.

All entries must be new! This gives you a chance to look at people’s hands in a new light for a while as you scout for the right subject.

Entries will be accepted from the 25th of January to the 25th of February. Please note me (:iconlovitude:) with the title of your piece as well as a link to your work so I can add it to the collection. This helps me stay organized!

Winners will be decided upon by the 4th of March.

My sister :iconseigyuu: and I will be judging the contest. If you would be interested in judging as well, please note me and we’ll see what we can work out. ;)

For the moment, prizes include:

1st Place:

Hello again! C:

I have a semi-question, you said you'd like to see other people's hands other than ours. Just wondering, can I shoot mine and use the third person narrative, as in storytelling. I've got other ideas, but I really would like to use my hands as the subject of this contest. Yes? No? Maybe?
